Congratulations – the pregnancy test is positive

How is your baby growing?

In the 5th week of pregnancy, organ development is already in full swing. The heart, circulatory system, connective tissue, lungs, intestines, nervous system, and reproductive organs are developing from the neural tube (the midline of the embryonic disc) and the embryonic layers. Your baby still looks like an oval disc. The amniotic fluid cavity is visible on the ultrasound.

Your baby is still as small as a sesame seed – too small to see with the naked eye.

How is your belly growing?

It's not visible from the outside yet, but your body is preparing for the adventure of becoming a mother. Your uterus is becoming softer and already a little larger, while your vagina is becoming more elastic due to the effect of hormones. The cervix closes with a mucous plug to protect your baby from disease. This 'doorkeeper' remains in place until shortly before delivery.

Your body is fully occupied with adjusting to the new hormonal conditions. You may notice this, for example, in the form of abdominal cramps, general malaise, fatigue, and breast tenderness.

In addition, the following may occur in the early stages of pregnancy:

  • itching (pregnancy rhinitis)
  • increased salivation
  • constipation
  • increased temperature after waking up
  • dizziness and headache
  • food cravings and overeating
  • frequent urination

What makes you grow as a family?

Do you want to keep your sweet secret to yourself or tell your family and friends right away? Of course – you decide when to announce your pregnancy. However, you should inform your doctor in good time so that they can monitor you in the best possible way. If you want to take medication or other preparations (even natural products), it is advisable to consult them.

You can also start looking for a midwife now. It is never too early, especially in times of midwife shortages, and with a midwife by your side, you can turn to her with questions and complaints, as she has experience and a professional, but usually less medical, view of the situation.
