Perfect match: The miracle of fertilization

How is your baby growing?

The fertilized egg begins to divide many times on its way to the uterus, until the cluster of cells that has formed implants in the endometrium about seven days after fertilization. This lays the foundation for pregnancy and the subsequent development of the embryo.

Even though the cluster of cells (blastocyst) that will develop into the future embryo is no larger than a pinhead at this stage, everything is already in place for the formation of organs. After implantation in the endometrial mucosa, the blastocyst divides into two parts:

The outer half forms the placenta, umbilical cord, amniotic sac, yolk sac, and chorion (the outer membrane surrounding the embryo or fetus).
Your baby develops from the inner half.

How does your belly grow?

Once pregnancy begins, the body naturally adapts to it. The first signal is given by the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is secreted after the embryo implants. This also increases the levels of estrogen and progesterone—two hormones that create a stable environment in the uterus so that the embryo feels comfortable and can develop well.

When is it advisable to take a pregnancy test?

Are you eager to find out if you are pregnant? Buy a pregnancy test: as soon as your period is late, you can take it at home.

Commercially available tests are 97 to 99 percent accurate. They measure the level of the pregnancy hormone hCG in your urine and thus confirm pregnancy.

What makes you grow as a family?

  • The first few weeks are often characterized by impatience, uncertainty, and anticipation. Use this time to discuss as a couple:
  • How do you feel about becoming parents?
  • What questions are on your mind?
  • What do you want for your family life?

We accompany you week by week on this special journey.

Even though your body is changing, you don't have to turn your whole world upside down. However, there are some things you should avoid from the beginning of your pregnancy to protect your baby. Alcohol and nicotine can permanently damage your child's development and health. Raw animal foods and cat feces can transmit infections that can be dangerous for both of you.

Therefore, the following applies in the kitchen: Heat food to at least 70 degrees Celsius, wash fruit, vegetables, and salad leaves before eating them, and avoid raw milk (and milk products) and smoked foods.

In addition: Wash your hands after handling raw food.

Here you can download an official guide on 'Safe nutrition during pregnancy' .

Otherwise, continue to eat as usual and enjoy the foods you like. You have the right to enjoy your pregnancy.
